From 28 to 30 April 2026, UNEP/MAP hosted in Athens the Steering Committee meetings for the EU-funded projects SEMPA, EcApMEDPLUS and MarineLitterMEDPLUS, highlighting best practices and strong support for EcAp, IMAP, marine litter management and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) at national level.
Implementation of projects in the southern Mediterranean
The projects support countries of the southern Mediterranean in the following areas:
MarineLitterMEDPLUS
• Implementation of updated NAPs on marine litter in line with the Regional Plan
• Promotion of marine litter monitoring (IMAP EO10)
• Strengthening of cooperation and regional partnerships
EcApMEDPLUS
• Implementation of the EcAP Policy and Roadmap 2026–2035
• Updating of national monitoring programmes in line with the 3rd IMAP cycle
• Integration of biodiversity measures in NAPs
SEMPA
• Effective management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
• Data collection for biodiversity and non-indigenous species
• Development of coastal and hydrographic IMAP clusters
