World Environment Day 2026 places climate change and its impacts on ecosystems at the center of international attention. The main event takes place on 5 June 2026 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the host country chosen to lead the global debate on the climate crisis.

Building on this path, the national campaign for World Environment Day 2026 highlights the planetary crises of climate change and ecosystem degradation, emphasizing their interconnected impacts on nature and society. The campaign focuses on climate action and on the signals the Earth is sending, with the goal of accelerating the global response to the climate and environmental crisis.

The Mediterranean on the Frontline of the Climate Crisis

Climate change is no longer an abstract challenge, but a phenomenon already evident at the regional level. The Mediterranean Sea is considered one of the planet’s climate “hotspots”: in recent years, sea surface temperatures have steadily increased, accompanied by more frequent extreme events such as heatwaves, stronger storms and prolonged droughts.
These changes have direct effects on coastlines and marine ecosystems, with consequences for biodiversity, fisheries and coastal communities. In this context, the response to the climate crisis goes beyond reducing emissions alone and becomes a strategic priority for the protection of the Mediterranean and for the development of a sustainable blue economy.
A key role in this process is played by UNEP/MAP, which promotes cooperation among Mediterranean countries for the protection of the marine and coastal environment, pollution reduction and climate change adaptation.

A Global Platform for Action

Governments, businesses, civil society and people across the world are calling for change – from ending the fossil fuel era, to restoring degraded nature, reducing pollution and demanding the right to a healthy environment. World Environment Day is the platform to bring global action together and I look forward to working with the Republic of Azerbaijan to drive progress on the climate crisis through World Environment Day 2026” said the Executive Director of UNEP, Inger Andersen.

World Environment Day represents the United Nations’ leading platform for promoting environmental awareness and action. Established in 1973 and coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme, it engages more than 150 countries every year, mobilizing governments, international organizations, businesses, local communities and civil society.

At a time when the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, World Environment Day 2026 delivers a clear message: the future is not predetermined, but depends on the collective and individual choices we make.

The planet is sending us signals.” The response depends on the choices we make today.
