Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans, threatening ecosystems, marine life, and the health of our communities. To address this challenge, #EUBeachCleanup was launched, an international campaign promoted by the European Union in partnership with the United Nations and the Smurfs. The initiative brings together citizens, associations, institutions, and volunteers from around the world in practical environmental clean-up actions, encouraging everyone to help protect our planet through simple yet meaningful activities.

The campaign’s flagship date is 20 September 2026, marking World Cleanup Day. To help clean up the environment, activities can be organised not only on beaches, but also along rivers, lakes, parks, and in urban areas. Even those who live far from the coast can make a valuable contribution, as much of the waste that eventually reaches the oceans originates inland.

Events, however, can take place over a much longer period, as the campaign officially runs from 23 May to 31 October 2026.

A Small Gesture, A Big Impact

Every piece of litter collected is a step forward in the fight against marine pollution. According to current estimates, by 2040 up to 37 million tonnes of plastic waste could enter the oceans every year if effective action is not taken.

The initiative supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Life Below Water (SDG 14)
  • Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12)
  • Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3)

2025 Results

The 2025 edition delivered impressive results:

  • 32 countries involved
  • 228 clean-up events organised
  • More than 9,000 volunteers participated

These figures demonstrate the growing environmental awareness around the world and provide a strong foundation for an even more ambitious campaign in 2026.

How to Get Involved

Taking part is easy. You can join an existing event or organise one in your own community by involving friends, associations, schools, companies, and local groups.

To organise a clean-up activity, simply:

  • Choose a location to clean up
  • Set a date and time
  • Involve volunteers and local partners
  • Ensure appropriate safety measures by providing gloves, waste bags, and hand sanitiser
  • Document the initiative with photographs and information on the amount of litter collected
  • Share your experience on social media using the hashtag #EUBeachCleanup

A Global Movement Driven by Local Communities

#EUBeachCleanup is more than just an environmental campaign; it is a global movement that demonstrates how meaningful change can begin with the everyday commitment of ordinary people.

Every citizen can help protect our seas, waterways, and local environment. Every bag of litter collected, every volunteer involved, and every event organised sends a powerful message of responsibility towards future generations.

The goal for 2026 is to build on the achievements of previous years and create an even larger network of active citizens committed to protecting the environment.
