A new opportunity for marine protected areas (MPAs) in Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Morocco, Montenegro, Tunisia and Türkiye to receive technical and financial support to strengthen their management on the long-term.
The MedFund supports the implementation of management plans and provides guidance to entities committed to the conservation of the Mediterranean.

The call is organized in two phases:
1. Expression of interest, until 31st of July 2026
2. Preparation and submission of the application, by 2nd October 2026 (midnight CEST)

Eligibility criteria:
– Be an officially established MPA or at an advanced stage of establishment;
– Have an up-to-date management plan or, at a minimum, a management guidance document;
– Have a dedicated management unit in place.

Any application submitted by a non-governmental organization must be accompanied by a letter of approval or support from the national authorities responsible for marine protected areas.

Eligible recurrent management costs include:

  • Human resources (excluding government salaries);
  • Maintenance of equipment and infrastructure, and purchase of small equipment;
  • Surveillance and enforcement of regulations;
  • Active governance and stakeholder engagement, including co-management activities;
  • Public awareness and communication;
  • Scientific monitoring (of 3 conservation targets);
  • Management activities aimed at improving the status of conservation targets;
  • Support/promotion of socio-economic activities;
  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation measures;
  • Inclusiveness and gender approach: promoting gender equality and inclusiveness;
  • Long-term sustainability of the MPA, including financial sustainability.
