Launch of a New Photography and Art Competition
JPI Oceans, the European initiative that coordinates scientific research and innovation on seas and oceans, is celebrating its 15th anniversary with the launch of a photography and art competition open to artists, photographers, and enthusiasts from around the world.
Since its foundation, JPI Oceans has promoted and coordinated research on some of the most pressing challenges facing marine ecosystems, including the ecological impact of deep-sea mining, the role of the oceans as a natural carbon sink, and the consequences of changing light conditions in marine environments. Some of these issues have now entered public debate, while others remain largely unknown outside the scientific community. Art and photography can help bridge this gap by reaching wider audiences and inspiring new emotions and reflections.
For this reason, on the occasion of its 15 years of activity, JPI Oceans invites creatives, professionals, and amateurs alike to engage with ocean science through visual arts.
Who Can Participate
All forms of visual art and photographic techniques are welcome. The competition is open to individuals aged 18 and over from anywhere in the world, whether professionals or amateurs, who are able to interpret ocean science through an artistic lens.
Each participant may submit up to two works. Eligible submissions include photographs taken during fieldwork activities, paintings inspired by scientific data, or digital compositions that reinterpret marine environments in an original and creative way.
Submitted works must have a clear connection to one of JPI Oceans’ Joint Actions. At the time of submission, participants must indicate which initiative their work relates to and provide a title for the piece.
Awards
The winner will receive a prize of €1,000, while each of the two runners-up will receive €500.
The winning works will be exhibited at the JPI Oceans office in Brussels and promoted through the organisation’s communication channels and events throughout the anniversary year. In addition, the possibility of displaying the artworks in an institutional venue in the Belgian capital is currently being explored.
