IEFCA Award presented at UNFCCC COP27

On the occasion of UNFCCC COP27, which took place from 6 to 18 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Tatjana Hema, UNEP/MAP coordinator, announced from the Mediterranean Pavilion the fourth edition of the IEFCA Environmentally Friendly City of Istanbul award.

The IEFCA award stems from decision IG.22/19 of COP 19 of the Barcelona Convention, with the objective of recognising the efforts of local authorities in promoting sustainable development in Mediterranean coastal cities.
Cities located along the Mediterranean coast can participate in the IEFCA award by demonstrating what concrete steps have been taken and progress achieved to protect the environment, improve the quality of life and promote sustainable development.

The application takes place online: city representatives through the platform developed by INFO/RAC, the UNEP/MAP Regional Activity Centre for Information and Communication, must register to obtain credentials that will allow them to fill in the online application form.

The Prize is a prestigious award: the first three editions of the Prize were awarded respectively to Izmir (Turkey) in 2017, Ashdod (Israel) in 2019 and Malaga (Spain) in 2021.
Award winners are invited to an award ceremony held during the meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols.
The call for applications will remain open until 30 April 2023.
