FAO presents a new study on the giant red shrimp and the blue and red shrimp, valuable fishery resources of the Mediterranean.
These species account for most of the landed value from deep-sea fishing, and to support this activity, in 2022 the GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean) adopted three multiannual management plans for both the giant red shrimp and the blue and red ones.
The study “Giant red shrimp and blue and red shrimp in the central-eastern Mediterranean, highlights the progress made in improving understanding of these species, but also emphasizes the need for further work to fill existing gaps in order to strengthen the management of deep-sea red shrimp fisheries.

This new publication represents the first comprehensive collection of data, information and research concerning the biology, ecology and fisheries of the giant red shrimp (Aristaeomorpha foliacea) and the blue and red shrimp (Aristeus antennatus) in the central-eastern Mediterranean. The study forms part of the framework of the multiannual management plans adopted in 2022 by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for deep-sea red shrimp fisheries in the central-eastern Mediterranean.
