EcAp MED III project takes place within the framework of Mediterranean Implementation of the Ecosystem Approach, in coherence with the European Union (EU) Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) during the period 2020-2023

The project titled “Support to Efficient Implementation of the Ecosystem Approach-based Integrated Monitoring and Assessment of the Mediterranean Sea and Coasts and to delivery of data-based 2023 Quality Status Report in synergy with the EU MSFD” (EcAp MED III) is funded by the European Union (EU). Its overall aim is to further assist the Southern Mediterranean Contracting Parties to implement the Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme (IMAP), adopted in 2016, as part of the implementation of the Ecosystem Approach Roadmap and contribute to the delivery of the 2023 Quality Status Report of the Mediterranean (MED QSR). It builds on the successful implementation of the previous projects EcAp MED I (2012-2015) and EcAp MED II (2015-2019).

With an overall budget of USD 2,494,790 including an EU allocation of USD 2,200,000 and the co-financing from the Mediterranean Trust Fund (MTF) of USD 294,790, the national component of the EcAp MED III are implemented in seven beneficiary countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia.

The EcAp MED III project activities are coordinated by the UNEP/MAP Coordinating Unit and co-executed by MAP Components (INFO/RAC, MED POL, PAP/RAC, SPA/RAC and Plan Bleu), in line with their respective mandates and areas of expertise. The delivery of EcAp MED III project activities is done in synergy with the implementation of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

The scope is to reduce the marine pollution in the Mediterranean by developing a Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) supporting the regular production and sharing of quality environmental data, indicators, and information.

The institutional partners are (a) UN Environment Mediterranean Action Plan (UN Environment/MAP) and (b) European Environment Agency (EEA)

The countries partners are (a) Algeria; (b) Egypt; (c) Israel; (d) Jordan; (e) Lebanon; (f) Libya; (g) Morocco; (h) Palestine; and (i) Tunisia.

THE AREAS OF WORK are (a)National work plans; (b) Indicators and assessment; (c) Data and statistics; and (d) Data management and infrastructure where INFO/RAC and EEA are co-leader.

The main role of INFO/RAC is to develop an infrastructure in line with EU standards with the purpose of supporting countries in reporting good quality data. The data are relative to water, waste and industrial emissions.

MEDCIS project is a follow up of the previous two calls from DG Environment that dealt with Joint Monitoring proposals and assistance on the Member States to develop Action Plans for Integrated Monitoring Programmes, Programmes of Measures and Data Management, under the obligations of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

The 3rd call addressed the implementation of the second cycle of the MSFD; achieving coherence, coordinated and consistent updates of the determinations of Good Environmental Status (GES), Initial Assessments and Environmental Targets.

The project is set-up to “Support Mediterranean Member States towards the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive new GES Decision and programmes of measures and contribute to regional/sub-regional cooperation”.

The main objective of the MEDREGION project is to complete gaps in monitoring data in the Mediterranean region/sub-regions by improving the data/information collection for the regional GES assessment and for the updated monitoring programmes, to be aligned and coherent to the IMAP process. This activity should take into account INSPIREEMODNET and WISE-Marine, as well as CORMON.

The main outcome from INFO/RAC are:

  • Survey of Mediterranean countries on the monitoring planned activities;
  • Data Catalogue of data available;
  • First release of Info System implemented available;
  • Final release of Info System implemented available;
  • Data collection and Data models definition;
  • Info System technical and non-functional requirements;
  • Report of the analyses of the links between monitoring and pressures for all relevant descriptors;
  • Info System Implementation and functionalities.

The general objective of Supreme project is to support the implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning in EU Member States within their marine waters in the Eastern Mediterranean, including the Adriatic, Ionian, Aegean and Levantine Seas and to launch and carry out concrete, cross-border MSP cooperation initiatives between Member States in the Eastern Mediterranean.
