On 6 October 2026, REMPEC, the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea, marked its 50th anniversary with a High-Level Meeting in Malta.

Established in 1976, REMPEC has become a cornerstone of regional cooperation on the prevention of and response to marine pollution emergencies, supporting Mediterranean countries in strengthening preparedness, coordination and collective action.

Celebrated under the theme “Our Mediterranean – Our Responsibility”, the 50th anniversary is both a moment to recognise five decades of cooperation and an opportunity to look ahead. As pressures on the Mediterranean continue to evolve, regional preparedness and solidarity remain essential to safeguarding the health and resilience of our shared sea.

Fifty years on, the message remains clear: protecting the Mediterranean is a responsibility we share.
