Developed within the framework of the MedAquaCC project, Plan Bleu has published the report Spotlighting Adaptation Solutions to Enhance the Resilience of Mediterranean Aquaculture to Climate Change.
Based on an extensive review of the scientific literature and the contributions of around 80 experts from the scientific community, public institutions, and the private sector specializing in Mediterranean aquaculture, the publication provides a practical approach to climate change adaptation. It identifies the sector’s main vulnerabilities, showcases examples of good practices already implemented, and offers recommendations to sustainably strengthen the resilience of Mediterranean aquaculture systems.
To support the development of the report, Plan Bleu brought together a group of experts through a series of technical meetings, including two webinars organized in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). During these exchanges, the working group discussed the key challenges facing the rapidly growing aquaculture sector in the Mediterranean.
The report aims to provide a valuable basis for adaptation and mitigation actions while strengthening the resilience of Mediterranean aquaculture to climate change. It offers an overview of the current state of Mediterranean aquaculture, an assessment of the sector’s vulnerability, and an analysis of the challenges faced by fish farmers, accompanied by practical solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation. It also includes a collection of best practices designed to promote resilience and sustainability across the aquaculture sector.
