Interview with UNEP/MAP Coordinator during COP24
The Mediterranean is a unique but fragile region, facing increasingly complex challenges: biodiversity loss, pollution, coastal degradation, and climate change. It is truly a climate hotspot, where the urgency for accelerated action is evident.
During COP24, held in Egypt from December 2nd to 5th, Ms. Tatjana Hema, UNEP/MAP Coordinator, was interviewed about the importance of regional cooperation and the central role of the Barcelona Convention, which transforms local actions into global impacts.
According to the MAP Coordinator, three key decisions will guide the work over the next ten years:
1. The Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development, emphasizing renewable energy, governance, and the role of local authorities.
2. The Ecosystem Approach, which provides a clearer picture of the Mediterranean Sea and coastlines and the measures that need to be taken.
3. The Regional Framework for Climate Change Adaptation, a fundamental tool to address climate challenges in a coordinated and effective way.
At the core of Tatjana Hema’s vision and analysis, it becomes clear that only through cooperation and shared action can the Mediterranean be protected and global environmental and climate challenges addressed.
