In Montreal, the world together to build a sustainable future.

This year, COP15, of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (also known as COP CBD, Convention on Biological Diversity) will be held in Montreal from 7 to 19 December. Now in its 15th year, the meeting brings together governments from around the world to set new goals and develop an action plan for nature over the next decade.

COP15 will be attended by Mediterranean partners working on biodiversity conservation to contribute to the debate on the new goals and implementation actions, in particular with regards to the protection of 30% of marine areas by 2030.

There will be a shared booth, “The Mediterranean Corner” (#420), which will serve as an open space for discussion and exchange, from 10 to 16 December.

The partners of the Mediterranean Corner are:

  • Technical partners: UNEP/MAP, SPA/RAC, INFO/RAC, PAMEX & PLIFF, ACCOBAMS, CEPF & BirdLife, FM6E, FPA2, MBPC (represented by ETC-UMA), MedPAN, The MedFund, Together for the Med (represented by BlueSeeds and IUCN-Med), UfM.
  • Financial partners: UNEP/MAP - SPA/RAC, EU (through the IMAP-MPA project), Ministry of Environment and Energy Security of Italy, MBPC (represented by ETC-UMA), ACCOBAMS, MedPAN.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was first signed by 150 government leaders at the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992. Its main objectives are the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilisation of genetic resources. The CBD is dedicated to promoting sustainable development and recognises that biological diversity not only concerns plants, animals and microorganisms and their ecosystems, but also people and their need for food security, medicines, air and water.

The conference will see the adoption of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. The framework provides a strategic vision and global roadmap for the conservation, protection, restoration and sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystems for the next decade.
